If I’m to Be Your Camera

If I’m to be your camera,
then who will be your face?
-REM

After researching cameras for a while and considering the various alternatives, I bought a new digital camera. I wanted a digital SLR that would allow me to take photos semi-automatically, like my trusty Sony DSC-V3, and do a lot more manual stuff as I climb up the learning curve.

30D-775836I settled on a Canon EOS 30D. I also bought a Canon Speedlite flash to use with it. My impressions so far are (a) it is a great camera that can do everything I want it to and more, and (b) I have a lot to learn about photography. I am going to take a camera class later this month, but so far it has been a process of trial and error. I happened across Darren Rowse’s excellent Digital Photography School blog. If anyone has any other sites I should bookmark, please let me know. My initial objectives are to learn the proper settings to take shots of the kids playing their sports and colorful shots in lower light settings and to learn how to manipulate depth of field.

Through reading the manual several times and trial and error, I have already flower-723925learned a lot more than I knew before about the various camera setting. I am still confused by the practical interplay between aperture, shutter speed and ISO. I know what each term means, but I don’t yet know how to set each for a particular shot or which one to set first.

I took a hundred or so photos today, first of a birthday party and then of the kids and their friends swimming.

jumping-771950The kids love to jump off the walls behind the swimming pool. Previously, getting a decent photo of them in flight was a hit and miss proposition, with at best one face sort of in focus and the rest of the faces blurry.

This camera will take 5-6 shots of the same jump, with every part of the picture in focus. This camera compared to my old one is more than night and day.

And that’s notwithstanding the fact that I am a mere novice at the digital SLR thing.

It’s going to be fun learning all this stuff, and I certainly welcome any bookmarks or pointers from the experts.

Good News for Digital Photographers

Thomas Hawk, my favorite photographer and one of my favorite bloggers, has a post today containing 10 Tips for the New Digital SLR Photographer.

I have been hoping he would add photography tips to his blog. I don’t know if this is the beginning of a trend or not, but I sure hope so. I can think of no photographer I would rather learn from than Thomas.

If you need proof of what a great photographer he is, take a look at this, or this, or this, or just about every photo in his Flickr Stream.

Cousins

Cousins

Uncle Scott, Aunt Kelly, Hunter and Hayden are visiting from Fort Worth on their way to Galveston for spring break.

The girls were so excited they camped out by the front door waiting for their cousins to get here. As soon as they did, it was into bathing suits and off the big wall.

Three Cheers for the Liberty

Liberty

Cassidy’s basketball team, the Liberty, had their last game today. Afterwards they had a snack and got trophies and a DVD we made of one of their games.

It was a fun season, and even though Cassidy is a year younger than the rest of the girls, she played hard and had fun.

The other coaches and I had a great time and we’re all looking forward to next season.

Flickr: Photo Books and Prints

I couldn’t post this before Christmas, because it was one of Raina’s presents, but I ordered one of the photo books Flickr sells in partnership with Qoop, and it looks great. Here’s how easy it is to do.

First I made a new set of my Flickr photos and included all the photos I uploaded in 2005. Then I reordered them from oldest to newest so they’d be in chronological order. Then I clicked on the set to get to my Flickr page for that set and selected “Make Stuff” in the menu bar. That took me to the Qoop page where I selected an 8×10, 2 photos to a page, two sided, glossy photo album. I refreshed the cover page selection until I got a mix I liked and titled the book “Newsome Family Photos 2005.” I bought 2 115 page, professionally bound photo books for a hair over $100 each. I gave one to Raina and one to my sister. These books are reasonably priced and look great. I can’t recommend them highly enough. I can’t believe you can actually buy something like this- and for only $100!

Yesterday I decided to print some photos of Luke to send to people back home. I selected the photos I wanted to print via the “Order Prints” link on the menu bar of the photo page, and went to checkout, where I was again amazed by Flickr. I paid 20 cents a piece for the prints, and was given the option of having the prints mailed or picking them up at my neighborhood Target store in one hour- that’s right, in one hour. I decided to pick them up, which was easy and fast. And the prints look great. Plus, you must get a number of prints free, since I ordered 10 and my total price was $0.

Flickr continues to amaze me. What a great site and what great service.

Luke Eutsler Newsome

I’ve been a bit out of pocket the past few days. Raina and I went to the hospital early Tuesday morning to have Cassidy and Delaney’s little brother. 32 and a half hours later, on Wednesday January 4, 2006, Luke Eutsler Newsome was born to a very exhausted mother and a very nervous father. He weighed 7 lbs, 15 oz. and was almost 22 inches long.

Luke because it was Raina’s favorite out of all the names we considered.

Eutsler in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Eustler, who have been like a second set of parents to me, particularly after my father died when I was very young. If this little guy can be half the man his namesake is, I will be very proud of him.

Raina and Luke will hopefully get to come home on Saturday. The girls are very excited about their little brother and can’t wait until he gets home.

Christmas Part 3: Christmas Day

Cassidy woke everyone up around 8:15. I came downstairs first to get the video camera ready, then the the girls came bounding down the steps to see what Santa had left for them. We opened presents, played with our toys and ate stocking candy for breakfast.

Later we went to church, where every child got to bring his or her favorite toy to the front for the blessing of the toys. It was the first time I recall seeing this, and it was very cool. Afterwards, we came home and the girls played some more and jumped on the trampoline. In the afternoon, we went to the Fenrichs for a wonderful Christmas meal of homemade gumbo and potato salad. We played a litte croquet and the kids exchanged gifts.

Then we came home, played some more and the girls collapsed in their beds after a fun and busy day.

It was a great Christmas.

Christmas Part 2: Christmas Eve

Today was a fun and relaxing day. The Clarks came over this afternoon and we played soccer in the new yard. The girls (Cassidy, Evie, Delaney and Yvette) beat the boys (me, Greg and Aidan) 20-8. I have yet to win a game on the new soccer field.

Later we went with the Fenrichs to the children’s Christmas Eve service at church and then to Outback for dinner. Last Christmas Eve we did the same thing, except it was snowing really hard and we came home afterwards and had a snowball fight.

After dinner the Fenrichs and the Clarks came over for dessert. The kids played on the trampoline and had a great time. Arnie and I played some pool.

After everyone left, the kids opened their traditional Christmas Eve presents, wrote a note for Santa and ran off to bed.

What a fun day!
